New Orleans is still alive and kicking
For more than four decades, Mike Gehrke – known as Mr. Jazz – shaped the Jazzclub Hannover (JCH) and made it an internationally renowned venue. Sadly, he passed away much too early and unexpectedly in 2004.
Fortunately, Nicolas Sempff took over the booking management in the same year and proved to be a worthy successor. He also organised the 50th anniversary concert of the JCH – the Orange Club.
By reestablishing the connection between Mr. Jazz – Orange Club – New Orleans, Sempff placed a strong emphasis on Gehrke's international jazz networks under the motto The Spirit Of New Orleans. This included the honorary citizenship awarded to Gehrke by the city of New Orleans in 1978.
Featuring the Irving Mayfield Quartet, he brought top-class representatives of New Orleans jazz to the stage – a first-class musical experience that brought the spirit of New Orleans jazz to life.
