SCULP TOUR - RED ALERT

What at first glance looks like a futuristic attack on Hanover is actually the skilful casting of shadows on a steel sculpture by Alexander Calder. The title ‘Hellebardier’ carries a martial energy and inspired me to create this shadow composition.

The red-painted sculpture, which is located near the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, is not shown here directly, but only indirectly through sharply defined, overlapping shadows that are constantly reshaped by the changing sunlight.

Calder inspired me with his ability to harmonise surfaces and forms in a playful and masterful way. It was not only in his famous mobiles that he succeeded in creating a harmonious interplay of light, time and space.

With this work, Calder demonstrated his extraordinary sense of dynamism – a quality that lives on even in the shadows of his seemingly static creations.

Curious about the sculpture? Here is the link to the map.
