LEARN TO FLY – THE MAKING OF
© Photography by H. Kahlmopz — performed by H. Gundlach — 2023 relaunched for the Internet
Once upon a time
Flying for everyone is pretty much off the ground and is one of the most beautiful dreams you can have. All you need to take off is a little self-deception. With that in mind - fool yourself and for sure - think of the landing before you take off!
The making of
Old industrial halls inspire with their morbid charm. In 1989, I had the space available in such a really large hall to realize a rather elaborate shooting scenario lasting several days. The working title at the time was "Black Boxes". The recordings were finally copied onto 6x6 cm slides and mounted in three self-built light boxes. From today's perspective, a mountain was circling at the time and gave birth to a final mouse. But also Hans Kahlmopz was born, because under this name I applied in an art association.
Intention
Photography is the collection of small pieces, like facts of the true, fantasies of the unbelievable as well as lies and also "true lies". What is shown here is more of a fairy tale, one about "Birdi Q's" way out of her cage in an incredible way.
Dedication
In that spirit, I dedicate "Learn to Fly" to my beloved grandchildren Leni, Yuma and Irma. They are the true "fairy tale experts".May they find the right balance in all situations, whether they are standing on solid ground or soaring above the clouds.
Thanks
and even more thanks to H. Gundlach. Without her commitment, this project would not have been possible. Even under difficult conditions she played a decisive role with her acrobatic moves, always acted with great joy and faced all challenges. For this once again my "standing ovations".
A loving thanks goes to my wife for her enduring patience during the conception and production of this website and beyond. And finally thanks to all and all I have forgotten.
I warmly welcome you to: Learn to fly - a true lie ➜ .
